Surprise’s planning and community development director resigned Monday morning, city spokesman Ken Lynch said.
Scott Chesney said he was leaving to seek a new job that better fits his “professional goals.”
“I feel like I’ve built good business relationships here and fully intend to stay in the Valley,” Chesney said.
The city had no additional information about his departure.
Chesney was appointed to the leadership position in March 2006. He was suspended in October for one week for failing to have an Arizona driver’s license more than two years after arriving in the state.
“Officially, I thought the driver’s license was resolved and we were back on track,” Chesney said about the incident.
Chesney first came to the city in August 2005, working as a planning manager. Before that, he was a principal of a redevelopment company in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The development director is a significant position for the city, overseeing planning for a city coping with intense growth.
Assistant City Manager Kathy Rice is filling in as interim director until a new hire is made.
Mayor Joan Shafer said Chesney’s resignation is a loss to the city. She added she had not been given details of the departure.
“It’s only fair to know what occurred, particularly for somebody that has built that department for us,” Shafer said.
