Incoming Surprise City Council members took their oaths of office Thursday at City Hall, although they will not take seats until January.
The meeting also was the last for City Council members Danny Arismendez, Martha Bails and Gary “Doc” Sullivan, all of whom lost elections this year.
Though stepping down, Shafer has her place in city history. The City Council voted to name the ballfield at DreamCatcher Park after her. The park, which Shafer lobbied for, is designed especially for local residents with special needs.
Mayor-elect Lyn Truitt and newly elected council members Richard Alton, Roy Villanueva and John Williams were sworn in at the end of Thursday’s council meeting.
It marked the final meeting for Mayor Joan Shafer, who has served as the city’s top official since 1995. Shafer opted not to seek re-election.
