The chief executive of the Northwest Black History Committee said his organization feels snubbed by Surprise due to its failure to produce a city grant to fund a Black History Month celebration.

City officials, however, report that the group submitted an inadequate grant application. The city instead has encouraged the group to participate in an upcoming “world cultural event” to be held in the city.

The group also has been invited to work directly with the Surprise Community and Recreation Services Department to coordinate a possible Black History Month event for the future, said Nancy Hoover, secretary for the Surprise Arts and Cultural Advisory Board.
