Surprise Environmental Division promotes irrigation check ups
The national Irrigation Association has dubbed July as “Smart Irrigation Month” and the Public Works Environmental Division reminds residents to routinely inspect their irrigation systems and change watering times throughout the year to conserve water.
“Most homeowners typically over water lawns and landscapes by up to 30 percent,” says Environmental Division Manager Christine Nuñez. “By learning how to water their landscape properly and use efficient watering systems, Surprise residents can play an important role in water conservation.”
Here are some recommended proper watering techniques:
- After a rain, turn off the sprinkler system (or install a rain sensor that does it automatically)
- Water early in the morning (4 a.m. - 8 a.m.) to reduce water loss from evaporation and improve soil absorption
- Water slowly to allow the soil to absorb water
