Make your New Year’s Resolution to use water efficiently
SURPRISE, AZ (Jan. 6, 2009) Many people vow to save money at the start of a New Year and the Surprise Water Services team reminds you that an easy to save green is to go green by managing your landscape watering.Over 70% of Surprise residents’ monthly water usage goes into outdoor landscaping, putting a pinch to the pocketbook. Taking the time to learn how to properly program your sprinkler timer not only saves water for the future, but also money on the water bill. Select a controller that is easy to use and has these features:
- Allows you to set multiple programs (to accommodate the needs of different types of plants and seasons).
- Accommodates intervals of up to 14 to 30 days. Plants don’t need to be watered as frequently in winter, or as they mature.
- Has a run time options of 2 hours or greater.
- Includes a “rain” or “off” setting to stop the watering cycle without disturbing the program settings.
- Has a battery backup to maintain your programs and clock during a power outage. Make sure to change the battery yearly.
You will want to change your sprinkler clock settings in March, May, October and December, as once each season is recommended. Plants do not require as much water in the cooler months than in the warmer months.
A basic sprinkler clock tutorial can be found online at www.surpriseaz.com, under the Living in Surprise section’s Water and Sewer link. From there you can access the Water Conservation pages. You can learn more at an upcoming free landscape class on Sprinkler Clock Basics through the Surprise Public Works Department Water Conservation program. For your coverage consideration.
