SURPRISE, AZ (January 9, 2008) Sustainable development, commuter rail, transportation safety- those are just a few of the issues Surprise Engineering Director Dr. Robert Maki will explore while attending the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington D.C., January 13 – 17. “About 10,000 people engaged in the transportation community will be there, providing a great opportunity for us to learn more about sustainable development and preservation of our desert character,” says Maki. “These are very important issues facing Surprise as we continue to develop more than 300 square miles for many years to come. It is our job to develop responsibly, so future generations can continue to enjoy much of what we enjoy today.”

Maki, a transportation industry veteran, has attended TRB Annual Meetings for the past 20 years and says it is a valuable educational experience. “We’re doing successful things here in Surprise, especially related to the Intelligent Transportation System, that we can share with the international transportation community and in return we learn so much from our peers regarding the latest in transportation best practices and technology that we can implement here.”

Maki is a member of the TRB Transportation Safety Management Committee and is the outgoing Chairman of the Maricopa Association of Governments’ (MAG) Transportation Safety Committee.

The TRB Annual Meeting will include a variety of workshops, paper presentations, Q&A opportunities and exhibitions featuring the latest transportation products and services.

TRB members include senior transportation industry executives, top officials of public-sector transportation agencies and researchers from academia.

The TRB is a division of the National Research Council (NRC), which serves as an independent adviser to the federal government and others on scientific and technical issues. The NRC is jointly administered by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine.
