Good morning,

Thought I’d pass this along in the event you are interested in a follow up to the Applebee’s Fundraiser on Feb. 16 in support of the Surprise Victim’s Advocate Unit.

Thanks,  Diane

Ma’am,

$360.34 is our take from yesterdays fundraiser. We get 10 percent of total food sales for that time period. So if my math is correct, that means $3,603.40 was spent by very generous citizens. I know when I went at about 7pm, there was a line to get in. I think this was a huge success and shows the great things that can be accomplished by Surprise PD, SPEA and VAU working together. We are awaiting the check to be mailed to the PD.  Also, with the support of the Chief, planning for a BBQ fundraiser here at the PD for VAU has started.

Regular City Council Meeting Minutes – June 10, 2004

Approval of the Fiscal Year 2005 Salary Plan – APPROVED. Councilmember Vukanovich thanked the City Manager and staff for their efforts in updating the system and wanted everyone to understand that this is not personal, but he does not agree with the consultant’s results and believes that it is a conflict of interest for staff to give recommendations for their own increases. He believes in the Capitalistic System, of supply and demand!

Councilmember Bails made the motion to approve the Fiscal Year 2005 Salary Plan with the stipulation approve the plan this year as is, but to create a new plan to present to Council for consideration before the next year’s budget process. Councilmember Sullivan seconded the motion. 6 yes vote (Shafer, Cox, Allen, Bails, Arismendez & Sullivan), 1 no vote (Vukanovich). Motion carried. For the record, Councilmember Vukanovich commented that he is not against the employees receiving a pay increase, he is against the system used to calculate the increases. He chose to vote “no” on this issue until the system is updated.

Elected Officials

Our elected officials

No balance, because they are in charge, CEO’s of Corporations are being blamed on our failed economy, where were the Board of Director’s?

In city government we hire professional managers who we mistakenly say, act as the CEO and the Council is the Board Members.

City’s, State’s and the Federal Government are in deep sh.., where do we lay the blame?

So do you just email the Mayor and CM to see if you can get something to use on them?  There is something disturbing about having a conversation with someone in a private setting such as by phone or in person or writing a letter or email or texting and then posting the conversation on public forum for all to see.  Do you cut and paste the conversations to your liking or what?  I never trust anyone who does that.  To me it is, well, unethical.  I understand they are public servants and whatever they write is for public viewing, but there is something a little tacky about trying to catch them in something in writing while pretending to be a “concerned citizen”.  I’m sure they are doing their best to answer your unrelenting barage of questions but really Mr V, there is something just not right about that.

Raz; In response to your comment,

My website surpriseaznews.com receives over 5,000 hits a month, all that I am trying to do is get (what I think is important) information out to the general public in Surprise, including what the City wants coverage on.

Mayor Lyn Truitt and City Manager Randy Oliver have been very helpful in addressing my issues, they know I have the website. I can assure you that I am not trying to trap them in any form.

Disability Advisory Commission Meeting

Date: February 18, 2009
Description: This active solution-driven Commission focuses on community-wide advocacy to address the needs of people with disabilities while increasing public awareness. Public attendance is encouraged.

SURPRISE, AZ (February 10, 2009) If you own a rental property in Surprise, you are now required to obtain a business license for each property, following a city council approved change to the Surprise Municipal Code. The change brings city code into line with state statutes and Maricopa County ordinances relating to rental accountability.

Previously those with two or fewer rental properties, in a non-commercial zone, were exempt from obtaining a business license in Surprise.

Business licenses for rental properties in Surprise are $100 per year. Applications are available online at www.surpriseaz.com, under the Finance Department, by mail, or in person, 12425 W. Bell Road, Suite B-205.

Owners will not be charged the 2009 license if they apply prior to July 1, 2009. A pro rated licensing fee will be applied on July 1, 2009 or later.

All rental property owners that have not filed for the business license by July 1, 2009, will be in violation of the city code and could face a penalty of up to $100.

All rental property owners are reminded that they must register with the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office. Forms are available at www.maricopa.gov/assessor. Failure to register a rental with the county could result in a $150 violation, per day.

For more information contact the Surprise Finance Department at 623.222.1833 or email staciem@surpriseaz.com .

Good Morning,

If a different business name/entity is set up for each separate location then yes separate licenses would be required.  If there is only one business name/entity managing multiple commercial properties then only one license would be required. Stacie McQuarrie Fiscal Support Specialist City of Surprise 623.222.1833 Direct staciem@surpriseaz.com

Are owners of  commercial property required to have a $100 license for each store that they rent?
How does this apply to apartments? How does it apply to a business that owns more then one home rental?

From your answer, I take it that a shopping center is not required to have a license for each store that they rent or lease.
  Apartments are considered commercial property.

Businesses that own residential property and rent that property would be required to have a business license.

Commercial shopping centers would not need multiple licenses for each tenant in a building, however, if there are multiple buildings in the shopping center and different entities are created to manage different buildings then additional licenses would be required.

When ?

In Mayor Lyn Truitt City Address on video, he said that Rio Salada owns the building that they are moving into, located in the city Complex.

Morning Mayor  (e-mail sent to Mayor Lyn Truitt to-day)

Hope everything is going well for you. In the video, City of Surprise State of the City you say that the building that Rio Salada will occupy in the city complex is owned by them, at what meeting was this decided?

As always, Bob

Growth

The Communiversity@Surprise, expected to open by fall 2009, will be a hybrid community college and university. Rio Salado is seeking higher-education partners to allow students to earn a four-year degree at the 26,000-square-foot facility in the new city hall complex at Surprise Center.

Rio Salado will spend about $8.5 million in bond funds to build its facility, which is being developed along with the new Surprise City Hall. With 17 classrooms, it will be able to accommodate about 500 students at a time, giving the center a 6,000- to 8,000-student capacity per semester. The 450 online courses that start every Monday further expand its capacity.

Two other manufacturers also are considering expanding into Surprise, Truitt said, but he would not identify them. He did say one could create 350 jobs within the first year and another 350 later. The other, a maker of paper goods and other products, is looking for a spot near the railroad line, he said.
