Another consent Item that they passed in Feb. 2008 making no provision to make a left hand turn on Santa Fe Drive when going South on Dysart Rd. at the railroad track.

This is going to create a real problem for the business’s in the original square mile.

Subject: highway money
 Mayor Truitt

I had a discussion with Supervisor Max Wilson this morning that I believed we did not receive a fair share of the gasoline tax, he said that the city is entitled to the same amount that the cities in the East valley receive. It’s unbelievably the highways that they have in the East. What he said was that the City of Surprise must apply for the money.

Has the City of Surprise followed this process? As far as I know I have never seen a request nor a rejection of one. Former Councilman Cliff Elkins had said he got I believe 40 million, where is it?   As always, Bob Vukanovich

Mr. Vukanovich,

The City receives HURF (Highway User Revenue Funds) to fund roadway projects.  The formula for receiving those funds is the same as all valley cities, however it is based on population so larger cities receive a larger share. In addition, the city has specific roadway projects that are in the Prop 400 plan paid for by the continuation of the ½ cent sales tax approved by the voters. Both of these funds are paid automatically based on population data tracked by the Department of Economic Security.  Neither of these funds require us to “apply” to receive them.

In 2006 the State Legislature appropriated $184 million in surplus funds to the MAG region to accelerate transportation projects within the regional prop 400 plan.   The City of Surprise was successful in securing $22 Million of that funding for the bridge work at Waddell, Cactus and Bell Roads along the SR303.

Beyond that there are occasional leftover funds that we term “closeout” or “enhancement” funds.  Surprise is at this time attempting to secure enhancement funds to improve the intersection of Bell and Grand and will also apply for smaller funds to complete much needed sidewalk projects along Grand Ave.

Please let me know if I can answer any other questions that you may have.
