Surprise recreation leaders have said they want to avoid post-opening problems by hosting public meetings at the front end, before construction even begins on the city’s first skate park.
The latest discussion will take place 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Surprise Community and Recreation Services office, 15960 N. Bullard Ave., south of Bell Road. The meeting will combine the Community and Recreation Services Advisory Board with the Teen Advisory Board to discuss proposed rules and regulations.
The 17,000-square-foot park will be built west of DreamCatcher Park on the Surprise Recreation Campus, located south of Bell Road and off Bullard Avenue.
The $905,000 park’s opening is tentatively slated for fall 2008.
The city is floating a few ideas for the facility that have already generated talk.
One is to separate the bike and skate user groups by alternating the days when each group could use the park. Some opponents of that proposal have said it would be impossible to enforce that system, especially since the current recommendation is to operate the park without on-site city supervision.
The city also is considering requiring the use of helmets and elbow and knee pads.
The skate and bike park regulations could go to the Surprise City Council as early as later this spring.
